SPRING 2008-HAPPY 200th BIRTHDAY TO THE OLD FLAX MILL!
This Spring we are exhibiting work by John Sibson, John Bird, Philip Stuttard and Malcolm Bowman.
John Sibson, well known across the county and beyond for his watercolours, has taken a detour from his well trodden path and, after attending the Slade School, has ventured into new territory with oils and acrylics. This new body of work shows a seamless transition and a new passion.
Philip Stuttard's new edgy skyscraper series is impactive and strong. The highrisers are 'built' in to the canvas and the resulting austere cityscapes have great depth and textural qualities. Anyone who is familiar with Genesis's impressive live tour set of 2008 could very well be linked back to 'Domino' when you view the image 'White City'! Also Philip's images and sculptures of mill, mining and factory workers always delight with his sense of humour depicting the funny side of life but without losing sight of dignity and pride. 'One Man and His Dog' is one such image which brings an instant smile!
John Bird's cityscape canvases are vibrant and noisy and the perfect antidote to his popular serene beachscapes!
Malcolm Bowman has brought an exciting collection of work to the Mill. He trained in the 60's under the dual tutelage of Victor Pasmore and Richard Hamilton and is a painter concerned with the contemporary context. He strongly believes in "a strong story element....and the paintings work on several levels of allusion and illusion".
